Moths in Fiji

Home Browse records Identify a moth

      Recent changes
This website was originally conceived as a means of making available details of my records of moths from Fiji. Most are of known Fijian species, but some are apparent first records for Fiji. It allows me to continually update the list and taxonomy as I work on my collection.

My records are not a comprehensive list of known Fijian species, and they also include a few records from elsewhere in the South Pacific. It was suggested to me that this information might be a useful resource for anyone working in Fiji, so I have tried to extend the site to present the data in different ways. I have also added some known Fijian species which I did not record, where a suitable picture was available. This is in no way an attempt to make the site comprehensive of all Fijian records. I hope, however, that it will help to make the section for identifying a moth a little more useful.

If you know the species, you can browse my records by family and species, and see pictures and record details. You can also download the records in csv format. A separate section of the site is intended to assist if you have a moth you are trying to identify. You must remember though that all known species are not shown - only those I have recorded and a few additional that I have been able to add.

I recorded moths mainly while I was working in Fiji from 1991 to 1998, with a few from more recent visits. I have a sizable collection, which I continue to work on, and I have photographs of all species. So far I have identified over 500 species, but I still have many unidentified specimens. I have published some short notes and papers, describing species new to Fiji and descriptions of new species (see references). This page also contains a few other references which may be of value

Among the Macrolepidoptera, families containing generally larger species, the majority of specimens are identified, as are a large number of the Pyralidae, Crambidae and Tortricidae. Among the other Microlepidoptera somewhat fewer species are identified, but more will be added as this happens. I try to be as thorough as possible in confirming all identifications. However, particularly in the case of some of the micros, published data can be very limited. I am always trying to improve the level of confirmation, and I will continue to update the site.

I try to keep the taxonomy as up to date as possible. I have added taxonomic notes in the case of some species where this may be of help to explain the name I have used. There is a link to these from the Species Details page, which can be accessed by clicking on the species name rather than its thumbnail.

Please remember:
Only moths I have recorded myself and a few others are included and there are a few records from Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu as well as Fiji.
